It's a pleasure!
Finally we can confirm that S/S “Southern Actor” is registered! Built with steam in 1950, perhaps one of the last originally built with steam. The main reason for this was power and speed!
SOUTHERN ACTOR was built as a whaleboat at Smith's Dock Co. Ltd, Middlesbrough for Chr. Salvesen & Co., Leith, Scotland in 1950. Caught with Flk SOUTHERN HARVESTER in the 1950s-60s, laid up in Melsomvik in 1962. Sold in March 1964 to Skjelnan Kvalstasjon A/S & Co, K/S (E. Aarseth & Co., Ålesund), and renamed POLARBRIS. Caught at Skjelnan whaling station in Troms, before being laid up in Ålesund in 1971.
Sold to Spain in 1975 and captured by Vigo 1975-85, sunk in 1981 in Vigo after sabotage by Watson's Sea Shepard. Raised and repaired. Later renamed ITAXA III.
Sold in 1989 for breaking up in Cee, Spain, but saved at the last minute by enthusiasts from Sandefjord and towed to the whaling town under the temporary name PINGVIN. Fully restored, painted in Salvesen's colours and renamed SOUTHERN ACTOR. Owned by the Sandefjord Museums. The world's only whaleboat of its kind in operational condition, with status as a museum ship.
